Laser Brightening or Resurfacing: Which Fits Your Skin?
Two treatments, two very different price points and goals, and how to decide which conversation to start.

One of the most common questions about laser skin care is the difference between brightening and resurfacing. Both are on Donna Starnes's menu in McKinney, they sit at very different price points, and they're built for different goals. Here's how she describes each one, so you can walk into a consultation knowing which conversation to start.
Laser brightening: the lighter option
Donna's description of brightening is that it gently smooths fine lines, refines lightly textured areas, minimizes pores and restores a healthy, radiant glow. She calls it quick and comfortable, and says it's suitable for all skin types. Brightening is done once a month for 3 months, with payment per treatment, so you pay for each visit as you go through the series.
Each brightening appointment is listed at 45 minutes:
- Face and neck: $200
- Face only: $150
- Neck only: $150
Laser resurfacing: the deeper work
Resurfacing is the more involved treatment. Donna describes it as renewing skin from within, purging old, damaged layers while stimulating fresh collagen. It works through multiple layers, which is how it can minimize pores, soften fine wrinkles and lighten aging spots and sun spots. Her site also says it's effective for acne scars.
Resurfacing is priced by area, and the appointment length changes with it:
- Face only: $400, 90 minutes
- Neck only: $400, 90 minutes
- Chest or back: $600, 45 minutes
- Arms: $600, 45 minutes
- Full legs: $1,000, 75 minutes
Matching the treatment to the concern
None of this replaces Donna's judgment once she sees your skin, but here's a rough way to think about it, based on how she describes each treatment:
- Skin that looks dull or tired, with fine lines and slightly rough texture: brightening is described for exactly that
- Pores you'd like smaller: both treatments list pore minimizing
- Sun spots or aging spots: resurfacing lists lightening them
- Acne scars: resurfacing is described as effective for them
- Areas beyond the face: resurfacing is priced for chest, back, arms and legs, and the brightening packages add hands and chest
Many people don't fit neatly into one box. You might have a few sun spots and also want a general glow. That's the point of a personal plan: Donna says there's no one-size-fits-all approach and that she builds treatment plans around each client's skin and goals.
How to think about cost
Brightening has the lower price per visit, but it's a monthly series of 3, so the cost builds across three months. Resurfacing costs more per visit and the appointment is longer for the face and neck, 90 minutes against 45. Donna also notes that the number of treatments depends on skin type, so neither sticker price is the full picture until she tells you how many visits your skin is likely to need.
That's why comparing the two on price alone can mislead you. A lighter treatment that fits your concern is better value than a stronger one aimed at something you don't have, and the reverse is true as well.
Whichever you choose, you're getting the same approach. Donna builds personalized plans, expects results to build over time instead of overnight, and offers customized maintenance programs to keep your skin looking its best. She also lists her focus as improving overall skin health and confidence while targeting concerns like acne, sun spots and uneven texture, which is a good reminder that the treatment names are only the starting point.
Packages for larger areas
If you want brightening beyond the face, Donna has two packages, each booked as a 120 minute visit. Face, neck and hands is $600. Face, neck, hands and chest is $1,000. As with everything on her menu, pricing is per treatment unless stated, and the number of treatments depends on your skin type, so ask what your series would look like.
Start with what you see in the mirror
The easiest way to choose is to skip the treatment names at first. Tell Donna what you notice when you look in the mirror: dullness, a few brown spots, a texture you don't like, marks that never faded. Then ask which of her treatments she'd start with and why. She'll also tell you how many visits to expect, and since each treatment is measured over about 4 weeks, ask how she'd space them.

The mirror right after treatment is the least useful look you will get, and Donna has a reason for saying so.
