Sun Spots, Freckles and North Texas Summers

If you grew up in North Texas, you probably spent more summer afternoons outside than you'd care to count. Years later, the freckles, brown patches and uneven tone on your face, chest and forearms are the receipts. Donna Starnes lists sun spot treatment and freckle lightening among her services. Here's how she describes the work, plus some plain sun-care habits that apply either way.

Sun spots and freckles are not quite the same thing

Freckles tend to run in families and show up early in life, and they usually darken after sun exposure and soften when you stay out of it. Sun spots, sometimes called age spots, build up slowly after years of sun exposure and generally stick around until something is done about them. Both are extra pigment in the skin, and both appear on Donna's menu. If you can't tell which you have, she can look at your skin in person.

One thing worth saying plainly: a spot that is new, changing, or looks different from your others is a question for a doctor before it's a question for a laser appointment. Donna also gets approval from a medical professional before treatment begins.

How Donna describes her treatment for them

Her resurfacing treatment is the one whose description mentions this directly. She says it works through multiple layers to purge old, damaged skin while stimulating fresh collagen, and that it can lighten aging spots and sun spots. Her About page also lists sun spots among the concerns she focuses on, alongside acne and uneven texture. Her website has before and after photos from her own clients, including a forearm sun spot pair.

Her pricing page doesn't have a line called sun spots, so ask Donna which treatment she'd recommend for your spots and what it costs for your area. For reference, resurfacing is $400 for the face and $600 for arms, chest or back.

What a before and after photo can tell you

Photos on Donna's site are useful, with limits. They show her own clients' skin at two points in time, but they can't show you how many treatments sat between those two frames, what the lighting was, or how your skin compares to theirs. Use them as a conversation starter. Point to the one that looks closest to your concern and ask Donna what that client's plan involved and what she'd expect for you.

Pigment can respond differently from one spot to the next, and some may need another round, which is part of why many clients do a series of 2 to 4 treatments.

Before your appointment: questions for Donna

Every skin and every plan is different, so treat this as a list of questions, not instructions:

  • How long should I stay out of tanning beds and direct sun before treatment?
  • Does a recent tan or sunburn change when I should book?
  • Which skincare products, especially strong ones, should I pause beforehand?
  • Is there a time of year you prefer to treat pigment?

The reasoning behind those questions is simple. Skin that is tanned or freshly burned is already reacting to UV light, and many providers prefer to treat skin that has had a chance to calm down. Donna knows her process, so let her set the rules.

After treatment: sunscreen is part of the plan

Donna finishes each visit by applying a cooling enzyme and sunscreen. It's a small detail with a big message: protecting your skin doesn't stop when you leave the room. A daily sunscreen, a hat for yard work and the pool, and shade during the middle of the day are ordinary habits that help any result last. Ask Donna exactly what she wants you doing in the days after your visit, because she's the one who saw how your skin responded.

Summer in North Texas

Between the heat, the long days and the drive to everything, sun exposure stacks up even on errands. Some people prefer to book when they can stay out of intense sun more easily. Whether timing matters for your skin and your treatment is a good question for Donna, not something a blog post can answer for you.

Remember that results unfold over time. A treatment is measured over about 4 weeks, many clients do a series of 2 to 4, and Donna offers customized maintenance programs afterward. In her words, time is your best friend, and that goes double for pigment you've spent years collecting.
